Alton Towers to face a soaring multimillion-pound legal bill after admitting responsibility for the rollercoaster crash that left five people with serious injuries.

Leah Washington from Barnsley in South Yorkshire was on the front row of the Smiler ride at Alton Towers when crashed into an empty carriage in front of it.

The 17-year-old sustained serious leg and hand injuries in the rollercoaster crash and sadly had her leg amputated above the left knee as a result from the accident.

Washington’s brother advised that after the surgery she initially needed a machine to keep her alive in intensive care, the 17-year-old who underwent surgery also fractured her hand when the carriage she was in ploughed into another empty carriage. Her 18-year-old boyfriend who was sitting beside her suffered two broken knees and extensive hand injuries.

Three others who were also on the front row with Leah also sustained serious leg injuries, while a fifth person is being treated for internal injuries.

A 27-year-old old hotel assistant manager from Buxton and 20-year-old Vicky Balch, from Leyland, have been described as the most seriously injured in the crash, Ms Balch’s solicitor advised she had suffered potentially life-changing injuries due to the accident and is expected to make a “substantial claim for damages” to support her recovery.

Merlin Entertainments is understood to be preparing for pay-outs of at least seven figures to help the 16 victims of last week’s crash on the Smiler ride.

The most seriously injured victims are expected to receive at least £1m in compensation due to the injuries that they have received.
